To create a DWG Toposurface in Civil 3D from a point database (such every bit an Excel file of points with Eastings, Northings and Elevations) first ensure your Database is formatted with just the 10,Y,Z Ordnance information for each indicate. And so, salvage as a .csv format. In the Civil 3D Toolspace, Right-Click Surfaces in the Prospector Tab and select Create Surface. In the Create Surface Menu, Assign your surface layer data (Tiptop Right) and give the Surface a Proper noun and Clarification. Finally, in the Prospector Tab, expand Surfaces – Definition – Point Files (Right-click) – Add together..
In the Top Right, click the plus and navigate to the Points File (.csv). Then, Ensure your Point File Format in Civil 3D is assigned to friction match your document formatting (eg. if the Point file is formatted into columns X,Y,Z and saved as CSV, and then ENZ [comma delimited] matches that format). Press OK. Zoom extents and snap view to 3D Isometric – you should see the new surface in Civil 3D!

So, now that we understand the principle workflow for taking Excel or Database hosted Point Files into Civil 3D and converting the data to a Surface we can delve into a little more detail on the overall process. I also outline a number of additional workflows for users to exist enlightened of which enables the activation and presentation of Profile Lines information, Triangulated Meshes, Slope Arrows, Summit heat maps etc.

Note – The video below explains how to model how users tin can generate a DWG Topography or surface in Civil 3D from a points database in detail, as well as runs through how to format such a database initially andvarious presentation considerations which I accept found beneficial. All high quality resources and sample files are bachelor for download here for you lot desire to piece of work in tandem alongside the tutorial. Relish!
Keep Below the youtube video for my full written step-by-step business relationship of how to convert a points file to a dwg surface in Civil 3D.

Detailed Tutorial Video where I show users how to take something like a Lidar Spreadsheet of points with Eastings, Northing and Elevation datum (Ten,Y and Z) and catechumen them into a CAD DWG topographical surface within Civil 3D for farther development.

How to Format the Point file for Seemless Ceremonious 3D Integration:

On receipt of point information, delight first place it in the correct binder directory for received Pre-Contract Items so information technology may be preserved in its original land.
Then, re-create it out into the Drawings folder (Civil) and create a new dated Subfolder named "OSI LiDar Data"

First thing – the Excel File / Points Database needs to be edited to see formatting that Civil 3D tin easily manipulate. Open up the Excel and you will be met with a table presented in the format shown below.

Image showing edits to Bespeak Data Excel Table prior to saving as CSV format and so that the Data tin can tie-in with Civil 3D Point File Formats seemlessly.

The Rows and Column Highlighted must be Deleted so that nosotros are left with only the Northings, Eastings and Elevation Information. Then, save the updated File in a .CSV format (Comma Separated Values). This is of import equally nosotros have to tell the CAD applications the formatting of the excel via Comma Delimiting spacings.

Point Data formatting for CSV should be formatted to only include the per betoken data. In this case I have shown Ten, Y and Z column data per indicate only to tie in with the Civil 3D ENZ (Comma Delimted) File formats – meaning Eastings, Northings, Elevations respectively. Note – Eastings and Northing Values were manually increased between screen shots.

How to Create an initial "Host" surface in Civil 3D

Open a Blank File in Civil 3D, ensuring that "No Template – Metric" is selected from the templates panel (we use this as templates can alter the land of units past auto-scaling, which can knock out any ordnance data – by non selecting a template nosotros remove the potential for this)

Selecting "No Template – Metric" when starting a new Ceremonious 3D File. This ensures that no data will take value transformations or scaling issues once imported into the Civil 3D Model space every bit templates can sometimes have transforms / scales embedded as default.

Ensure that you take the Toolspace Dialogue window Open (Left Mitt Side). Go to the Prospector Tab within the Toolspace Dialogue window.

In the Prospector Tab, Right Click Surfaces nether the Cartoon heading and select Create Surface

Location of Prospector Tab within the Toolspace DIalogue

When the Create Surface Window opens, commencement select the Surface layer carte on the top right. From there, create the layer you wish to place the surface onto. The default is Layer 0 so avoiding creating the surface on that layer or defpoints layers is generally appropriate.
And so, Infill your surface Name and Description data. Press OK once complete.

Applying Surface Layer conventions, naming the Surface and adding the description within the Create Surface Menu.

How to bring Point Data (Excel CSV File) into Ceremonious 3D and append it to the Host Surface to generate the Topographical model/surface.

Now that the Surface has been created, you can expand the Surfaces selection tree within the Prospector Tab. Y'all should be able to come across the Betoken Files selection in the tree under the Definition selection tree. Correct-click "Point Files" and Select "Add…".

Expand "Definition" in the Prospector Tab. Right Click "Point Files" and select "Add…"

When the Add together Point File Carte du jour has opened, press the "plus" button to the top correct corner and navigate to the CSV File y'all have created.

Once selected, ensure that you correctly specify the Betoken File Format your Excel CSV document is using. In the Instance, our society of points reading right to left is "X,Y,Z", translating to "Eastings, Northings, Point Elevation". Every bit nosotros take output a CSV file format (Comma Separated Values) then we tin can select ENZ(comma delimited) as the known points file format.

If you take selected your Points File and the appropriate points format then y'all should see the Preview Tab populate with the point values in the right columns.

Finally, ensure that "Do elevation adjustments if possible" is turned on, merely exit the Coordinate Transformation option below off.

Settings applied inside the "Add together Point File" Menu within Civil 3D to accurately generate a Toposurface from the Excel Point database.

A Surface should now exist available in 3D Space, every bit per the below.

Initial Surface presentation subsequently generating it from the CSV Points database within Civil 3D

While the surface in 3D is dainty to have, we still need to brand some adjustments inside Civil 3D so that the contours, coloured elevations scheme, points etc are visible in both Programme and 3D views respectively.

How to update Civil 3D Surface Presentation Styles for visualising Contours, Elevations Color grading, Triangulation, Indicate ID's and more than.

In order to update the presentation of the surface in Plan and 3D (Model) views alike, practice the following.

First, open the Settings Tab (below the Prospector Tab). Expand Surface – Surface Styles – Standard. Double-click on "Standard" to open the Surface Styles Menu.

Navigating through the Settings Menu to update the Surface Styles inside Civil 3D

In the Surface Way – Standard bill of fare, select the Brandish Tab.

In the View Direction dropdown box, select the view blazon you want to update the styles for (Plan, Model or Section). Then, turn on the visibility of the components you wish to display in that view style. In the instance below the Contours Visibility was turned on.

Activating the Contour Major and Minor Line Presentation withing the Surface Styles Menu. Note – Triangles, Points, Edge, Contours, Grids, Elevations, Slopes and Directions tin all have their visibilty and presentation controlled from the aforementioned dialogue.

Now the Civil 3D Surface derived from the Excel points file should show completed contour lines, as per the following beneath:
