Texas' Chris Beard has beaten Matt Painter's Purdue teams twice in the NCAA Tournament

MILWAUKEE -- Texas' Chris Bristles has beaten Matt Painter's Purdue teams twice in the NCAA Tournament. Both times, Bristles had the worse-seeded squad.

He volition try to do information technology again Sunday when the 6th-seeded Longhorns (22-11) face the third-seeded Boilermakers (28-7) in the second round of the East Region.

In Beard's alone flavour at Little Rock, his 12th-seeded Trojans won a 2022 first-round game 85-83 in double overtime over a fifth-seeded Purdue team. Ii years later, Beard was at Texas Tech when the tertiary-seeded Blood-red Raiders won a regional semifinal 78-65 over second-seeded Purdue.

"Obviously from a coaching standpoint, you acquire from it," Painter said Saturday. "Yous desire your teams to be as tough as their teams. Y'all want your teams to be able to compete like that. That'southward why he keeps getting actually good jobs, and that's why he keeps advancing in the tournament."

Beard says many of the things he did during his lonely flavor at Little Rock were based on the success Painter had at Southern Illinois before heading to Purdue.

"He is one of my kind of mentors in coaching," Beard said. "I've reached out to him before in coaching moves, on recruiting, just on advice. I've had probably a dozen really meaningful conversations with Matt over the years, and he's somebody I really listen to and respect."

The Trivial Stone upset withal bothers Painter. Petty Rock trailed by thirteen with merely over 3 one/ii minutes left in regulation before rallying. The Trojans tied the game by sinking a 3-pointer from about xxx anxiety away with 5.1 seconds left in regulation.

"We're up three with 18 seconds and we don't foul and that's a lot of time, right, but they don't take their shot until five seconds to get," Painter recalled. "It really taught me a lesson in terms of most people at that time are going to go be ambitious right away considering they're upward against time. They'll fifty-fifty go get a quick 2 at that time.

"So that was something that really jarred me. I thought we should have fouled there, and I fabricated the mistake of not fouling after information technology got under 10 seconds."

Now they face off again, trying to send their corresponding alma maters to the Sweet 16.

Texas simply won its first NCAA Tournament game since 2022 and is seeking to make the regional semifinals for the first time since 2008, when it advanced to the Elite Viii.

Purdue has ambitions of earning its Final Four berth since 1980. The next step is for Painter to avenge those two earlier losses to Beard-coached teams.

"The losses stick with you lot," Painter said. "That'south what stings about our business. People have no thought how that churns with you five, x years later on. Those moments only are tough, only you attempt to acquire from it and be amend and keep rolling."

BUCKET BROTHERS

Texas' Timmy Allen appreciates the way his blood brother Teddy burst onto the national scene this week by scoring 37 points in New United mexican states State's 70-63 outset-circular victory over UConn.

Teddy Allen's career has been nomadic, with stops at West Virginia, Wichita State, Western Nebraska Community College and Nebraska.

"It'due south great to see him rocking out," Timmy said. "He'southward got an interesting story. A lot of people got a lot of things to say a lot well-nigh him. But he's good. He's showing that none of that ways nil. Then it's great to see him hooping."

Only he also wants to get something straight. Tim says he was "Timmy Buckets" long earlier Teddy got the nickname "Teddy Buckets" for his scoring prowess.

"I was the original Timmy Buckets," Allen said. "It's been my Twitter handle since like seventh course or something like that. Then he started going crazy and he just went to Teddy Buckets."

RIVALRY RENEWED

This won't be the beginning time Texas' Marcus Carr and Purdue have faced off. The Minnesota transfer played against Purdue iii times from 2019-21.

Carr scored 27 points in a double-overtime loss to Purdue in 2019-20. Minnesota split two meetings with Purdue last season. Carr scored nineteen points in the win but had 6 points and shot 2 of 13 in the loss.

"They do a lot of similar things, so I'm sure they're going to be breaking out their old scouting report on me besides as what I've washed this twelvemonth," Carr said. "I'm going to endeavor to help my team and the coaches with just some of their tendencies and stuff they liked to do in the past."

Purdue's Eric Hunter guarded Carr in those matchups. Hunter says Carr is a different role player now.

"Now he's like more of a patient player," Hunter said. "I think that comes with the nature of, you know, going to a different program. At Minnesota (a lot was asked) of him to make plays, put the ball in the basket, and at present he does a fiddling bit more playmaking than usual. He definitely tin put the brawl in the handbasket whenever he wants to. Definitely got to spotter out for that."
